Facebook Case Study

Facebook apps under fire and particularly the popular application-FarmVille. An investigation by the Wall Street Journal says Facebook applications are spilling Facebook ID information out into the world and making it simple for advertisers and firms to grab your info and sell it.
This Facebook privacy leak affects almost every Facebook user even if you lock your privacy settings right down. It breaks Facebook’s own rules. Information from locked pages can end up seeping out into other areas of Facebook.
Facebook applications exposing your Facebook ID is a big issue because it can be tied to your own information . Facebook says, “A Facebook user ID may inadvertently be shared by a user’s browser or by an application but that does not permit access to anyone’s private information on Facebook.” It says it is set to introduce new features to battle the issue.
The WSJ investigation claims three of the biggest Facebook apps including Zynga’s Farmville and Frontierville games have been transmitting personal information about users friends to outside companies. That means even if you’ve stayed far, far away from Farmville, you could still find your details have escaped from Facebook’s walled garden.
The Facebook ID is a public part of any profile. You can use it to look up a person’s name using a standard web browser, giving you the nugget of information you require to hunt down more information. The WSJ found at least one firm which has linked Facebook ID information with its own databases which it sells to advertisers. However the company claim that was unintentional.
A Zynga spokesperson also told the WSJ: “Zynga has a strict policy of not passing personally identifiable information to any third parties. We look forward to working with Facebook to refine how web technologies work to keep people in control of their information.”
